SHEARWATER Returns Home
To Her Berth

At  ‘SHEARWATER LANDING’
Kinsale, VA

AND

Now For The Latest Update!
(Message From The A-37 Editors, etc…..)

As reported in the last newsletter, we left SHEARWATER ‘on the hard’ at Bock Marine, near Beaufort, NC, to attend the wedding in Corpus Christi, TX of Kaye’s brother Max.

We launched SHEARWATER at Bock (had Bock paint the boat bottom) and departed Bock  on June 8 (2016) to begin the last leg of our ‘southbound cruise’ back to her berth at SHEARWATER LANDING (our home on the Yeocomico River near Kinsale, VA).

We had a (relatively) normal up the ICW to Hampton, VA, then up the Chesapeake Bay to home.

Stops were made at the following places:  Broad Creek; Alligator River; Deep Point; Goat Island; Hospital Point (Norfolk, VA); Old Point Comfort (Hampton, VA); Then ‘Home at Last’  on Sunday, June 19.

Happy To Be Home!

We’ve decided that this was our ‘Last Southbound Cruise’.  We’ve ‘been there/done that’ for the past 10 years, and mutually agree that we have too many things left in our ‘bucket list’.  As we’ve owned SHEARWATER for 34 years (we bought her in 1982), we plan on ‘Cruising the Chesapeake Bay’ now in our ‘spare time’.  No, we aren’t thinking of selling SHEARWATER!  We simply don’t have the time to devote 7 months or more to Southbound Cruising each year.

We have thoroughly enjoyed all of our cruises, and especially treasure all the places we’ve visited, and all the friends and   acquaintances we’ve met over the years.

Thanks, and……

‘KEEP CALM AND CARRY ON’

Tom and Kaye

New Members

Welcome aboard to JASON ELLIS, of Morrisburg, ON, new owner of PERTINAX, the 1971 MK-II  Yawl previously owned by Sam and Max Ruben.   Jason had an ‘Alberg Wanted’ add on the ‘For Sale’ section of the website, and it finally provided results!  Jason also wrote that he is having ‘rudder problems’ with his recent purchase:

‘I purchased Pertinax. I believe it's a 1971 yawl with a 54hp Perkins. I can't find the hull number no where. The sails are in good shape but the hull needs work. The rudder needs to be fix/changed. A few things in the hull needs some attention and the wood need (well not sure what imma gonna do with that). But it's going to be a summer project to float next year. If you have more details about this boat that would be awesome. It was floating last year until the last owner used the rudder to get off rocks.

We are stripping the inside, stripping the outside. Installing new port holes, dual anchor roller and 1 windlass, full canopy, full electronics, solar panels, inverter, hot water heater, a main catcher(still don't know the name but it olds the main on the mass when down), changing all cordage, checking all metal lines, might convert the mizzen into a solar/radar/windmill/whatever else pole.

We want to do the great loop broken with a ARC trip to the Med. 2 years on the water. We could have purchased the one all done up in Halifax but I wanted a boat that I put together myself so I know where everything is and how to fix it and how to fix it on the fly or bypass it (you know what I mean).

My Searay 460ec wasn't going to bring me a cross the pound and it would of cost us about 20k us in fuel to do the loop. So this is my hope that we can do this before I m 45. Let's hope it all goes well.

Jason W. Ellis.’

Ron Fisher, the owner of the 1973 MK-II Yawl WONIYA, recently sent the following:

‘Hi Tom

I thought I would remind you that there is a Facebook page for the AL-37 as well as a adjoined group. The page has over 325 "like's" these days and we are always referring people to your organization. I would be great if you wanted to cross promote the IOA on our Facebook page!

 Cheers

Ron Fisher’

Gord Martin of Mississauga, Ontario, the owner of MAGGY FIELDS, 1975 Sloop, #142, reports that he has sold his boat to the son of the former owner (twice removed) Desmond McCrindell, who sold the boat (then named Rob Roy) to John (Scotty) and Fran Lamont in 2000 who kept the original name.  In 2002, Scotty and Fran sold Rob Roy to Gord Martin, who renamed the boat to MAGGY FIELDS.  The new owner, Robert McCrindell, and son of Desmond McCrindell will rename the boat to it’s original named Rob Roy.

(Ed. Note: It’s quite nice to see that a ‘Good Old Alberg 37’ stays in the family!)

We recently heard from Brian and Kathy Marsh, the owners of the 1977 MK-II Sloop TUNDRA (currently For Sale):

‘Good to see you home. Always feels good! No offers on Tundra yet. Just tire kickers. Have a great summer. We plan a trip to the North Channel in our camper and runabout. Lazy man’s way to cruise.  Join us sometime.

Brian & Kathy’

Brian and Kathy also sent the following photo of  ALDEBARAN, a 1973 MK-II Yawl.  This boat is now owned by the original owner’s son, Robert (Andy) Larson of Minnetonka, MN.

He sure does a fine job keeping her in "Bristol" condition!

We recently heard from Ian Cheeseman, the owner of the 1987 Alberg 37 MkII Sloop #245:

Hi Tom & Kaye,
Thanks for the newsletter, hope you had a pleasant winter south and have same at home for the summer. I am presently at home in the
UK after returning from Grenada where Estoril was hauled for the storage. Weather here not as warm as there!
As Estoril is now in
Grenada could you please change the advert in the newsletter to reflect this. Also could you add that the standing rigging was replaced & change the asking price to $30000USD as I have advertised her there for that. Thank you in advance.
Best regards Ian Cheeseman

Jorg Mattern the owner of MAJA, has the following items for sale:

MIZZEN MAST COMPLETE WITH BOOM AND ALL NECESSARY HARDWARE, CABLES, TURNBUCKLES AND SO ON. THE MAST IS ABOUT 23 FEET TALL. IT CAME OF MY ALBERG 37 SAILBOAT. I DECIDED TO GO WITH JUST THE SLOOP RIGGING. I SAIL BY MYSELF AND JUST DON'T WANT TO DEAL WITH A SECOND MAST AND SAIL. THE MAST IS DESIGNED FOR A YAWL SETUP. I'M NOT SURE IF IT COULD BE USED FOR A KETCH CONFIGURATION. WHEN I GOT THE BOAT THERE WAS A LARGE WIND GENERATOR, RADAR ANTENNA AND MAST STEPS MOUNTED ON THE MAST. I REMOVED ALL THOSE. IN MY OPINION THAT WAS TOO MUCH WEIGHT ADDED. IF I WERE TO MOUNT IT BACK ON MY BOAT IT WOULD BE JUST THE MAST ITSELF. BECAUSE OF THE ADDED COMPONENTS THERE ARE SOME ADDITIONAL MOUNTING HOLES IN THE MAST. IT WON'T HAVE ANY EFFECT ON THE STABILITY. JUST NEED TO MENTION IT. THE MAST IS BUILT VERY SOLID AND HEAVY. IT IS LOCATED AT MY HOUSE AND THAT'S WHERE IT WOULD HAVE TO BE PICKED UP FROM. THERE ARE ALSO 2 WINCHES MOUNTED ON THE MAST. I INCLUDED SOME PICS FROM WHEN THE MAST WAS STILL MOUNTED ON THE BOAT. PLEASE CALL OR EMAIL IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS. THANK YOU FOR LOOKING.

P.S. THE WIND GENERATOR, RADAR ANTENNA AND MAST STEPS ARE NOT INCLUDED.

ALBERG 37 WANTED

I'm looking to cruise the world for a couple years and I can't think of any boat I would rather do it on then an Alberg 37. I'm not looking for a project boat so ideally it's ready to go but I'm also not afraid to put in a little work if that's what it takes. The catch, I'm in California, so I'm only looking on the west coast. If you have or know of an A37 on the west coast in reasonable condition I would love for you to email me at trevor@ellermann.net. Thanks!

Spindrift
AKA ‘Boilerplate’
By the Editor

We are always looking for articles (cruising, racing, maintenance, etc.) and photos of your boat for inclusion on the website and newsletter. Send the articles via email attachment in MS WORD and the photos in .JPG format if possible. Please don’t send large files, especially high resolution photos. Photos should be 100 kilobytes or smaller if at all possible. Hopefully, we've included most or all of the pertinent correspondence that we've received over the past few months. Our apologies to those items which we may have missed.

We need a good candidate for "Featured A-37" It's been several years since we had a new addition to the Featured A-37 list. If you would like to do a write-up and submit photos of your boat, we'd like to hear from you! Take a look at the articles on the website (click on the link above) as examples.

The A-37 IOA participates as a cooperating group with BOAT U.S., and members receive BOAT U.S. membership for half price. Just mention you are a member of the Alberg 37 Owners Group and include the Cooperating Group number GA 83253 S when you join Boat U.S. or send in your annual renewal of membership.

Have a great Alberg 37 Summer!!!   Think about the proposed Rendezvous and attend if possible
